Endometriosis Pain: Understanding Symptoms & Treatment Options

Question
Hi Martha,
I am now 23, but have had very painful heavy periods since I was about 16. I have suspected it to be endometriosis as the pain is so unbearable to the point of vomiting and blacking out. It is just utter agony! A specialist has told me that there is no real point in getting a laproscomy as they can cause more damage than good in some cases, and that it would not cure me anyhow. Because I have not been properly diagnosed my family presume it is normal period pain and I am just being dramatic. Just today I explained to my father that I couldn't do an errand, as I might have another bout of pain whilst driving which would be dangerous as the pain often makes me pass out. Of course he thought I was being dramatic and proceeded to lecture me about excuses and taking control of my life etc etc. It is so hurtful to have family think this of me and constantly tell me I'm being dramatic. It makes me so depressed and I feel so alone and helpless. How can I get my family to understand that this is real! and not in my head? Thank you
Katie

Answer
Hi Katie
Your past sounds much like mine...I, too had such labor-like pain, that I vomited, passed out and actually went into shock twice, due to the pain...
It is real...it is a real disease. Have your family take a look at the website at Endo Research Center. There, they give you the symptoms of endo.
I would get another doctors opinion, like a high risk/fertility doctor. These doctors are very up on treating endo.
You do not have to suffer, there are treatments out there.
I know how you feel, along with feeling horrible 3 weeks out of a  month, the fatigue, headaches, and just overall stressed out physical feeling...
I have missed more social events, school and work due to painful periods over the years.
I am sorry you cant get your point across...but if anyone experienced this monthly pain themselves, they'd believe.
Go onto the above website...they might even be able to advise you on a new dr. in your area.
Tell your family, it is a very real disease, I have had several surgeries over the years due to endo...I highly doubt my doctor would have done any of them if he thought I was being dramatic.
And as far as the lap test...thats odd that your doctor said it was a damaging procedure. It is so simple and would help you immensely in diagnosing how severe your endo is...and yours sounds severe...
Good luck in getting through to your family. You can also get pamphlets sent to you from the Endo Research Center, that may help.
    Take care.
Martha
