Understanding Endometriosis Symptoms: Pain Patterns & Relief Strategies

Question
Hello,
I have a questions about endo and symptoms. Here is a bit of my background. I have had painful and heavy periods for years. I am 40 yrs old now and have been diagnosed with Fibroids and possible endo. I had an endometrial ablation a few months ago which got part of the fibroid out of my uterus, but it did nothing for my pain. The symptoms I am experiencing now are very tender uterus and ovaries, and pain going up the right side of my abdomen to almost under my ribs. Pain is almost constant now. My doctor thinks this pain is from endo and I am trying to schedule a Laporascopy to see what is going on in there. My doc feels I should have a hysterectomy removing ovaries, uterus and cervix, along with any endo we might find. I really want to be conservative and just do a lap and find out what exactly is in there. I am sorry this is so long, but this is so confusing. I guess my main question is can you have pain going up your abdomen as far as your ribs? Thank you so much for being willing to answer questions on this frustrating subject. Any input or feedback you have would be appreciated.

Maria

Answer
Hi Maria,

First I'd like to say that I'm sorry you're having continuing pain and hope your doctor finds the source of the pain *soon* and takes care of it.

It's likely that you have endometriosis causing your symptoms. Deep disease is suspected when pelvic examination finds nodularity or tenderness at a specific point ("focal tenderness"). Acute pelvic pain with the symptoms/locations you've described can be a number of things.
Here are some I suspect are causing your symptoms...

Endometriosis on the appendix, colitis, or enteritis, among other conditions. The *appendix* would be my guess. The amount of pain is not necessarily related to the extent or size of growths. Tiny growths are usually more active in producing prostaglandins, which may explain the significant symptoms that often seem to occur with small implants.

Can you have pain going up your abdomen as far as your ribs?
*Yes you can*. The intestines, and appendix in my opinion are to blame...

If you're experiencing a pulling-dragging sensation in your right side with tenderness then endo on your appendix could very well be the problem. These will cause pain to be felt as far as your ribs.

I'm going to suggest also to you as I do ALL women with chronic female pain to *drink lots of water*. You would be surprised how drinking water reduces pain and heals disease.

I hope I've been some help, and if there's anything I can do for you in the future please let me know. Also please let me know what your doctor finds with your tests.

I wish you all the best Maria, and hope you are pain free soon.

Love,
Bet
