Early Pregnancy Cramps: Are They Normal?

Question
Hello Dr. Rappaport,

I am 9 weeks pregnant and have been having some cramps, exactly like PMS cramps (with absolutly NO bleeding, back pain, lower abdominal pain, or sensitive to the touch pain) and I'm curious if I should be concerned. Otherwise, I feel great.

Should I call someone? I have no insurance untill April.

Thanks,
Renee

Answer
It is very common to have some cramping in early pregnancy. As long as you are not having any vaginal bleeding, you probably are fine. At 9 weeks gestation (from the first day of your last period) a sonogram should show a fetus and a fetal heartbeat, so if you have any doubts, call for an appointment and get a sonogram. A sonogram will reassure you. You can safely wait until your insurance kicks in before you get the sonogram .  Good Luck.
