Endometriosis Symptoms & Diagnosis: A 17-Year-Old's Experience

Question
Hi, I'm Lauren.  I am 17 and I think I may have endometriosis.  My periods have been pretty regular but my cramps would be pretty painful and felt more like a stabbing pain.  I didn't think anything of this until the pain started coming at anytime rather than just when I was on my period.  I had skipped my period for two months but I still had the stabbing pain.  I went to my family doctor who later sent me to the ob/gyn.  She told me I had blood and protein in my urine and sent me get and ultra-sound to check for a cyst and she was going to do tests on my urine as well.  She told me everything came back normal which made no since to me.

Answer
Hi Lauren,

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. I found out I have a pinched nerve in my neck and am on complete bed rest for 2 weeks. Anyhow, to move on to your question...

Your GYN did not test for Endo. An ultrasound can not diagnose Endo. The only way is through a Laparoscopy. A Lap is a small procedure where they look inside your abdomen.

If you have pain above and beyond slight cramping...then something is wrong. If your GYN is pretty much dismissing you, find another doctor.

Many women with Endo will have pain at other times too. Not just with their period.

Ask your doctor to do a Lap to rule out Endo. Endo affects so many women and is the leading Gynacological disorder...when women complain of cramping, this should be a doctors' first instinct. So, ask for the Lap and don't back down. You deserve to know what is wrong.

Any other questions, please feel free to ask again.

Sincerely,

Angie
