Possible Pregnancy at 43: Negative Tests & Symptoms - What To Do?

Question
I am 43 years old, gravida 4, para 2, and in average health.  It has been 6 weeks since my last period and my husband and I have not been careful with using birth control so it is quite possible I am pregnant.  I feel familiar symptoms of the earliest stages of pregnancy like breast tenderness, fatigue, excessive urination, bouts of nausea.  But, I have taken 4 over-the-counter pregnancy tests and one urine pregnancy test in my GP's office and all have come back negative.  I can't get in to see my OB/Gyn for another week, and I am just in agony over not knowing what is happening inside of me.  Is it possible that all those urine Hcg tests could be wrong and I am pregnant?  Or should I prepare myself for the idea of early menopause or something worse?  What is your best guess?

Thanks!

Paula

Answer
Hi Paula,

It is tough to say in this situation.  The best possible thing you could do to put your mind at ease is to have your physician call in an order for a serum HCG to the lab and have your blood drawn.  This will at least let you know whether you are pregnant or not.  Good luck!
