Early Pregnancy Concerns: Spotting, Cramping & ER Visit - HCG Level 52

Question
I just found out on 4/19/07 that I am pregnant.  The on 4/21/07 I started having light brown spotting on the TP when I went to the bathroom and cramping started about six hours later.  I went to the ER, when occasional bright red bleeding started and after 7 hours was told the following: HCG level at 52, yolk sac in uterus, cervix closed.  I was given a RhoGam microdose and told to see my OBGYN on 4/23/07.  I continue to have light cramping and bleeding (NO CLOTS).  I am so panicked right now and was just wondering if there is any chance that I am NOT having a miscarriage?

Answer
Dear Sarah,

Vaginal bleeding can occur frequently in the 1st trimester of pregnancy and may not be a sign of problems. Studies show that anywhere from 20-30% of women experience some degree of bleeding in early pregnancy. Approximately half of pregnant women who bleed do NOT have miscarriages.

As long as the bleeding does not become heavy and/or containing tissue or clots or become accompanied by cramping that is as severe or more severe than menstrual cramping, then don't panic. Just try to take it easy and don't exert yourself any more than you need to while bleeding. Any time there is vaginal bleeding during pregnancy it is important to remember that you should not introduce anything into the vaginal canal, such as tampons or sexual intercourse.

I hope this information has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
