Spotting During Pregnancy: Understanding Threatened Miscarriage & Next Steps

Question
Hello,

I am 18 years old and 9wks pregnant. I have been spotting for two days while passing small amounts of tissue (about a dime-sized amount). I have been to my OB/Gyn and the emergency room. they just told me that the baby is ok (there is a good heartbeat and my cervix is closed), i have "threatened miscarriage" and that i should be on bedrest until i am through with my first trimester. I have two other children and i have never experienced this before. I just wanted to know if there is any way of knowing what the tissue is that i am passing, and what is "threatened miscarriage", and how worried i should be about my situation.

Thank you for your help,
Ashly

Answer
Hi Ashley :)

Your condition, could be a potentionally serious one. If you have been advised to be on bed rest, its essential that you do just that. It may save your pregnancy.

Threatened miscarriage is when the body is possibly trying to terminate the pregnancy. The symptoms of bleeding, passing tissue, with mild to moderate cramping are all symptoms of pending miscarriage, or miscarriage.

The good news, is that at this point the fetus seems to be okay. A heartbeat is a good indicator of this, as well that your cervix is closed.

Its important to know, that not all pregnancies are the same. Its very alarming, when you experience strange episodes in a pregnancy, when previous ones have been routine and normal.

Its most likely that the tissue material you are seeing is the endometrium(lining of the uterus) that is starting to deteriorate, and pass down. The fact that the baby is still visable, indicates that the tissue you are seeing is NOT fetal tissue, or related directly to the fetus.

You didnt mention if your OBGYN is going to monitor your condition. Usually, in situations such as yours, you will be closely monitered by having your HCG and Progersterone levels watched. If your Progersterone level decreases, as well as your HCG, this is an indication that your pregnancy could be failing. Sometimes, doctors will put patients on progesterone suppliments in hopes it will raise levels to save the pregnancy. It is essential that progesterone levels are appropriate to maintain pregnancy. If they are to low, miscarriage is inevitable. If you havent been asked to come back to have blood work done to monitor your condition, I would advise that you call your doctor and ask for it to be done as this can give you indication as to how your pregnancy is doing.

As I said early, if you have been advised to be on bed rest, its essential you do so. Have your partner do all household chores, and errands. You shouldnt lift anything over 5lbs at this point at all. Try and keep your stress to a minimal(I know, easier said then done!) I strongly suggest against sexual activity, until atleast past the 12 week mark. When sitting or laying down, keep your feet elevated always :)No exercise, and definatly no standing on your feet for long periods of time. These are all tips, in effort to save your pregnancy.

If a miscarriage is iminent, there is nothing anyone can do to stop it. Just know in most cases, when the body terminate a pregnancy its because there is something terribly wrong with the fetus. In most cases, its chromosonal issues, that lead to miscarriage. However, there are many times when a woman's body shows signs of possible miscarriage that she is able to save her pregnancy by suppliments, and bed rest. So its essential right now, that you really care for yourself and take it really easy.

I hope this has answered your question, and should you have further questions, or concern, please dont hesitate to write back.

I wish you all the Best, and Thankyou for writing :)
