Post-Intercourse Bleeding in Pregnancy: What to Do?

Question
I am 5 months pregnant.. and after intercourse yesterday i started bleeding.. it was bright red like a period.. the doctor said it was alright and would stop.. and that it was normal. Well it didnt stop all night so i went to the ER and they checked my cervix and it was still closed. then they checked the babys heartbeat and said it was great.. but i woke up this morning still bleeding.. and now its 8 @ night and im still bleeding. I called the docotr again and they are not concerned and dont wanna see me until my next appt.. but im worried.. what do you think? Is the baby okay?

Answer
Dear Megan,

If your cervix has remained closed and the fetal heart rate was "great" (which tells me it was a good rate and variability), I would not be overly concerned. You did absolutely the RIGHT thing to go in and make sure everything was ok. But now that they have checked you and the baby out physically, try to stay calm.

If the bleeding had begun spontaneously, without any stimulus for it at all, I would be a bit more concerned. But obviously the sexual activity was the stimulus. Sex during pregnancy is generally safe, but sometimes it can cause uterine contractions and spikes in hormone levels which can cause some bleeding.

The bleeding should taper off and stop within a few days. If it does not, or if you begin to have abdominal cramping along with it, call your doctor again, voice your concern, and ask if they can simply check for fetal heart tones. But as long as you continue to feel normal fetal movement, your baby is reassuring you that everything is a-ok.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
