Understanding Prolonged Bleeding After a Miscarriage

Question
Hi.
Let me start by saying I have Polycystic Ovaries.  I have never had regular periods and when left on my own have been known to go over a year between bleeding.  My husband and I want more children.  Our first child is and IVF baby.  My second is a miracle baby that we had on our own.  On June 16th we had a frozen embryo transfer.
I had a miscarriage of twins on July 18th.  An ultrasound showed that the miscarriage was complete the next day. My OB thought  initially that a D & C would not be necessary.  My bleeding continued for a long time, and my hormone levels did not drop.  I tried pills to cramp the remaining tissue out.  That did not drop my HCG levels either or stop the bleeding. Finally I had a D&C on August 11th.  On Sept 18 I was still bleeding and having HcG levels.  So my doctor prescribed 10 days of progesterone to try and stimulate a withdraw period to stop the bleeding.  I bleed all the way through taking those pills and continue to bleed now. The good news is my HcG levels finally hit 2 last Sunday Oct. 4.  My doctor now has prescribed Loestrine24FE to try and stop the bleeding.  She wants me to take 3 pills a day for 3 days, 2 pills a day for 3 days, and then finish the pack 1 pill at a time.  The hope is this will stop my bleeding and then I will have a regular period.
I've been reading about this pill online and some of the side-effects.  Frankly I'm scared to death and feel a little like a science experiment.
I haven't started this pill yet, and would love a second opinion before I do.  Any ideas why I'm still bleeding?  (about 5 light day pads a day)  Is this prescription a safe one?
I did have one ultra-sound after my D&C.  It showed a small amount of tissue left in my endometrium.  That was back when my numbers were still really high.  Do you recommend any other tests?

Answer
Hi Dawn,

The reason for your bleeding is because you still have tissue left inside your uterus, you will continue to bleed until this tissue is expelled. I believe you should be given a different drug as Loestrin 24 Fe will not expel the tissue. I recommend you talk with your doctor about how necessary this drug is. Good luck!
