Early Pregnancy Cramps & Bleeding: What's Normal?

Question
I know it is safe to have sex when pregnant.  I'm about 2 months.  Is it normal to have alittle bleeding? Could it be a sign of miscarriage? I do have cramping through out some of the day but it's not after sex.  Is this cramping normal?

Answer
Cramping during pregnancy is normal, as is a tiny bit of bleeding in early pregnancy. Often it is brownish and is from "old blood" that is being pushed out of the uterus. If it is bright red, it may be due to the formation of the placenta  ("Subchorionic bleeding"). It is also quite normal to have some bleeding following sex during pregnancy because the vagina is very "hyeremic" (blood is at the surface of the skin) and rubbing will easily cause inflamation and scratches, causing bleeding following sex. However, if the bleeding becomes heavier than a normal period, you must consult with your doctor because THAT may be the beginning of a miscarriage.
