Understanding Light Bleeding After IUD Insertion: Causes & What to Do

Question
Hi there you've answered a question for me before and i appreciate it...I was curious i was due for my period on 4/13/07 but it didn't show till 4/16/07 but the entire week every day i would bleed for a few hours than stop the rest of the day unless i had sex than it would start back up again, and to tell how much blood there was, i went through maybe one pad the entire week if i'm lucky...And i took one of the dollar store pregnancy tests this past saturday and the part where the positive is suposed to be came up right away after the pee went across it but the line was greyish blackish and i just took it for a evap but i've been lookin at pics of positives and i found one that looked just like mine so i'm alittle confused...Just maybe looking for insight of what you may think it is or if it's something else besides pregnancy, and were trying for our second child...

Answer
Dear Sarah,

Implantation bleeding can happen around the time when you would normally expect your period to occur, though usually it is a day or two before you'd expect your period rather than 3 days after. However, it is possible that you may have ovulated/conceived late during the last cycle which could have made implantation bleeding occur later.

The test sounds like it likely gave a positive result but some of the cheaper test kits are more difficult to read. If you are unsure, I would suggest picking one up at your pharmacy (ask which one they recommend as being the most reliable if you feel comfortable doing so) and re-test. Make sure you are using 1st morning urine to get a concentrated sample. The other option you have is to go to your doctor's office or women's clinic and request a serum beta hCG test which will give you and actual amount of hCG in your bloodstream. Any amount of 25 mIU/ml or more would be considered positive.

I hope this information has helped you and answered your questions. I wish you well.
