Post-Abortion Bleeding & Pain: A 16-Year Follow-Up

Question
i had an abortion on 25 sept 2007 and i was given antibiotics [tetracycline] to take. i took it almost religiously, missing some days, but it wasn`t that bad. i continued bleeding after the abortion for around 1 week and 6 days, which i was told was normal b/c i was already 19 weeks pregnant when i`d had the abortion. i was experiencing some pains kind of like cramps but it felt like my cervix was throbbing or something. i ignored it b/c i figured it was just because of the post-op bleeding.
i was supposed to go to the doctor for my post-op check-up, but i chickened out of it & didn`t go. i couldn`t find a place to go to anyway, b/c i didn`t want to go back to where i`d had the procedure done.
the cramping/throbbing feeling stopped around 3 weeks after the abortion [& that means a week after the bleeding had finally stopped.] i got my period back the week before november started.
after my period finished [first week of november ended], i had sex. i started bleeding a little bit, but not a whole lot. it is noticeable though. it`s brownish-reddish. i`m worried b/c i don`t know what it could be. i haven`t had sex since then, & it`s been almost a week since then [it is now 7 weeks after the abortion].
is there anything i can do about this? i don`t want to go to some specialized sex clinic - will a walk-in clinic doctor be able to help me? & is the bleeding abnormal?

Answer
Dear Kei,
The bleeding can be irregular like this on and off since an abortion.  If it continues to be a small amount of bleeding, there is nothing to be concerned about.  The color of the blood doesn't mean anything bad.  If you start bleeding heavy or passing clots, or if the cramps/throbbing come back, you need to see a doctor.  Any family doctor should be able to help you with this.
I hope this is helpful,
Doctor Joan
