Short Periods & Infertility: Understanding the Connection & Seeking Help

Question
I really hope you can help me. I'm 32 years old. I have had 2 miscarriages and have been unable to get pregnant for the past 12 months, with my period now lasting only about 12 hours.

My first pregnancy ended in a fetal demise at 12 weeks and I had a D&C. I was pregnant one cycle after that miscarriage and miscarried again naturally at 10 weeks. Since the second miscarriage 1 year ago, my periods have been very short, between 1-3 days, but for the past 2 months they haven't been anymore than 12-24 hours, including spotting, hardly enough to even wear a tampon; Before my miscarriages they were the normal 4-6 days, with heavy bleeding. I have been tracking my ovulation over the past 11 months with OPT and BBTs and have ovulated every month except one. My cycles are pretty normal, between 27 and 34 days. I have been to 2 OB/GYNs,one also being an RE. When I asked them if it is normal to have periods that last 1-2 days, they said yes, but something in my gut tells me that something is wrong. One doc put me on Clomid for 4 months with no success. I did have blookd work done 2 months after the second miscarriage to check for all the autoimmune diseases and they all came back negative. My hormone levels showed a low progesterone level, but again, my doc says that doesn't mean anything. I have had a hysteroscopy to check for adhesions - none. I cyst was found on one of my ovaries, but nothing else. Could you please tell me what you think may be the reason why my periods are so short and what I can do to get my body back to normal so we can have a baby? Could these very short periods be causing me to not get pregnant again?

Thank you so much for your help!

Kelly

Answer
Dear Kelly,

Wow - it sounds like you have been through it!

Many times to get periods "kick started" again doctors will use a dose of progesterone. If your progesterone levels are low, it may be that your short periods are related to that. Menstrual cycles and the relationship of the hormones which govern our cycles are pretty intricate. If even one of the hormones are a bit off, it can throw the whole works off. There is also a progesterone gel/creme that can be used topically.

Talk to your doctor(s) about this possibility. Sometimes/some doctors get funny about being questioned about their care or about suggestions that they don't think of themselves. You'll have to feel this situation out. Make sure you are seeing a doctor who is completely open to and committed to YOUR ultimate goal. Not one who is lackadaisical and won't take the time to dig deeper and try every possible thing for you.

I hope this information has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
