Understanding Infertility After Multiple Miscarriages: A Comprehensive Guide
QuestionHi. I am 20 years old and have been married almost 1 year. I have never been on any form on birth control and I have had 3 miscarriages since last May (2004). The first one being in May (4-5 weeks along), one in August (8-9 weeks along) and one in September (3-4 weeks along). There is no family history of any problems conceiving, in fact both of our families are very fertile. Since September 2004, we have tried to become pregnant again with no success. I have been on Clomid and watched my cycles and I am ovulating normally. My husband has been tested and he is fine also. In March 2005 I started my period on the 28th and now in August 2005, I started yesterday on the 8th. That's quite a jump, isn't it? I have also been diagnosed with a blood clot disorder which intensifies when I'm pregnant and they think that's why I miscarry. When I do get pregnant, I will have to do daily shots of blood thinner. Any suggestions on something new to try to become pregnant? Anything would be helpful.
AnswerIf you are not getting your period regularly, you are, therefore, not ovulating every month. You cannot conceive unless you ovulate. The Clomid may help, but Clomid only increases the chances of ovulation. We know that you can, indeed, conceive because you had three miscarriages in the past. That meanst that you do have the capeability of conceiving. Miscarriages occur in 15-20% of every pregnancy. You may have miscarried due to a blood clot disorder, but may also have miscarried due to chance. I would suggest that you speak to your gynecologist about a better way to ovulate or to see why you are not ovulating. You may have to go on birth control pills for a few months until your period becomes regular. Then you would stop the pills and become pregnant.
