Delayed Period: Causes, Spironolactone & What to Do

Question
Hello, I am 32, and have no children.  I have taken a couple pregnancy tests and they have come up negative (thankfully).  I am concerned because I have not had a period for almost 3.5 months.  Actually there was one day of spotting about 2.5 months ago if that counts, but nothing since then. I know there are certain factors to consider that may be the cause.
1. I have been taking spironolactone for the past 3 months.  The spiro was perscribed by my dermatologist for acne, which has cleared up.  I started off taking 50mg twice daily.  But now, have reduced the dosage to 50mg once daily for the past month, but still  no period.
2. I lost some weight.  About 4 months ago I was working a lot, still excercising and eating less.  I initially weighed about 120 and I am 5'5" and I lost about 10lbs.  Some of it water weight because of the spiro.  Over the past month I have been eating extra and am back to my normal weight.  I have been taking vitamins and eating lots of protein and veggies and whole grains.
3.  I was under a lot of stress 3 months ago, so that may explain the missing period back then. But now, I am worried.
I do not have health insurance now, but will as of Jan 1.  I will go in for an exam in Jan, but until then, is there anything I can do to get back to normal? I want to keep taking sprio because my skin is better but I don't want to mess up my reproductive system...  I intend to have children in a couple years.
I have never missed periods like this before, and I am otherwise healthy.

Answer
Spironolactone (a diuretic) does not cause irregular periods or interfere  with the period at all.  There is a critical weight range abbve or below which you may cease having a period. It is doubtful that your weight loss of only 10 lbs caused you to stop having yur periods, but it is possible.  Stress can sometimes cause your period to stop. HOwever,I believe that you stopped your periods due to a drop in your progesterone level. Ask your gynecologist to induce your period for you with Provera 10mg twice a day for 5 days and you should get your period within 10 days. Then you can go on birth control pills for a few months to regulate your cycle. You do not have to stop the spironolactone.
