Delayed Period & Prolonged Bleeding in Teenagers: When to See a Doctor

Question
My daughter is almost 13. She started her period in July. She has been bleeding since November 4th. Altough she tells me that it has not been heavy, I am concerned about the length of time. I have been checking the box of pads she uses so I know that she is right. Should I get her into our doctor quickly or can I phone so she can be seen in a few days? I do not recall having this porblem when I started. Thank-you.

Answer
It is common for girls between puberty and 20 years of age to have "anovulatory" cycles. This can cause absence of the menstrual period or irregular or heavy periods. However, if your daughter has been bleeding for longer than 14 days, she should see a gynecologist. If she is not symptomatic (anemia, passing out, fainting) you do not have to rush to the doctor. However, she may have to be placed on hormonal therapy to stop the bleeding (either Progesterone or birth control pills).  If you have any doubts, consult with your gynecolgoist.
