Medroxyprogesterone and Ovulation After PID: Pregnancy Risks & Chances

Question
Hi.  Recently I have been given medroxyprogesterone as a way to make my period come. About five years ago I was diagnosed with PID. With this medication what are the chances that I'm ovulating(and when), and that I may become pregnant. I know that the chances have decreased because of this disease.  My husband and I have been trying to have a child for about a year now, and nothing is happening. Please help me!

Thanks

Answer
Dear Adelina,

Medroxyprogesterone is used to treat abnormal menstruation (periods) or irregular vaginal bleeding. Medroxyprogesterone is also used to bring on a normal menstrual cycle in women who menstruated normally in the past but have not menstruated for at least 6 months and who are not pregnant or undergoing menopause.

Doctors use medroxyprogesterone to get an idea of what's going on with your body. By bleeding after stopping the medication, it indicates that:
-your ovaries make enough estrogen to cause your uterine lining to thicken (and prepare to sustain a pregnancy)
-the cervix and uterine lining are structurally normal
-you are not currently pregnant

It may also be useful for post-BCP amenorrhea and to help regulate irregular periods when you are trying to conceive.

However, it does not make you ovulate, does nothing to address ovulation problems, and does not help treat any underlying conditions that might be associated with infertility. If there is an issue with ovulation for you, it will need to be addressed and you may end up needing a referral to a fertility specialist for a more intensive work-up.

If you are actively trying to conceive, I would suggest paying attention to your cervical mucus (indicating ovulation) a couple of weeks after quitting the medroxyprogesterone. This mucus is more abundant, wetter, and stringy - similar to a raw egg whites consistency. Starting on a prenatal vitamin if you are trying to conceive is also a good idea.

I hope this information has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
