Possible Pregnancy: Understanding Delayed Period & Testing

Question
Me and my boyfriend had sex 3 days before my period was suppose to come on.We had unprotected sex and yes he came in me... The day my period was suppose to come on it didn't! We had sex on the 28th and my period was due on the 31st. Is there a chance i could be pregnant? I was wondering in order to take a pregnancy test should i count from the day of my missed period or should i count from the date that we had sex? My period still hasn't came on and it has been almost 2 weeks ago when this happened.. Please help me!!!

Answer
Dear Tawanna,

Three days before your period is due is typically not a real fertile time of your cycle, but if you have had unprotected sex anytime during the last cycle or two, you cannot dismiss the possibility of pregnancy.

You will need to test for pregnancy to know for sure. Although some tests claim accuracy on the first day of a missed period, I usually suggest that women wait until the week after a missed or spotty period before testing for pregnancy. This tends to minimize the incidence of false negative results and also avoids wasting money on a test for a simple delay of a period by a few days. When you test make sure to use 1st morning urine to get a concentrated sample for the most accurate results. If you are two weeks after the day you expected your period, go ahead and test.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
