Understanding Contraction Stress Tests in Late Pregnancy

Question
is is common practice to have a stress test prior having a baby within a week.  I
am 34 is the age the reason?  I think I am in fairly good health.  This is
bothering me very mush.

Answer
Dear Mary,

A contraction stress test is done to check:
-If your baby will be okay with the reduced oxygen levels that normally occur with contractions during labor.
-If the placenta is healthy and can support your baby.

A contraction stress test may be done when results from a non-stress test or a biophysical assessment are not in the normal range.

For a contraction stress test, the hormone oxytocin is given to you in a vein (IV) to cause labor contractions while monitoring with an external fetal heart monitor. If your baby's heart rate slows down (decelerates) in a certain pattern instead of speeding up (accelerates) after a contraction, your baby may have some problems with the stress of normal labor.

I can't tell you specifically why your doctor ordered this test for you because I don't know your history. I would suggest that you ask your doctor why he/she ordered the test. Ask if there is a concern about how the baby will handle labor and, if so, what has caused the concern.

Please be assured however, it is fantastic to have this information going into labor/delivery IF there is going to be an issue. It does allow your doctor and the entire medical team to be prepared and give you and your baby the best possible care.

I hope this information has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
