Pregnancy & Physical Demands: Safety for You & Baby

Question
I am two months pregnant now, and just got a dream job offer; Deputy Sheriff.  The written and Physical agility tests are in  a week.  I will have to drag 165 pounds, and hurl myself over a 6 foot wall (I may do this clumsily, and am unsure as of to how my landing will be). I also have to run 500 yards in less than two minutes. Is this okay for the baby?  I really want to try, but not if the life inside of me will be harmed. Also, what does this type of strain do to the baby?  I'm only two months along...does this make it okay?

Answer
Devon,

Miscarriage, is most common in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.

You are right in the middle, of a critical time in your pregnancy, and the very last thing you should be doing is dragging 165 pounds anywhere, let along hurling yourself ofer a 6ft wall.

I understand this is a dream of a lifetime for you, but I gotta be honest with you here.

You are NOT susposed to be lifting anything over 5-7 lbs right now, so certainly 165 pounds is completely out of the question.

You are susposed to be relaxing, taking care of yourself, and keeping your feet up. Hurling yourself over a 6ft wall, is certainly extremely dangerous to your baby, as as you, being pregnant.

If I were your doctor I would forbid it. These activities could throw you into a complete miscarriage, or cause serious complications with your pregnancy. Complications such as placenta previa, birth defects, and mental retardation, especially if land hard on your tummy. You could also have a life threatening hemmorage.

So, guess you have to ask yourself whats more important. The job, or the baby? Regardless, the baby is going to be born in 7 months, you would have to take maternity leave anyways!

Seriously, its not worth it. Going through with these agility tests is posing major harm to your baby, and yourself. Its simply, not worth the risks.

Hope this answers your question, and thanks for writing.
