Post-Depo & Birth Control: Fertility Concerns & Next Steps

Question
I have been off of depo for three years now. I used depoprovera for five years. The pill for eight years prior to that. No birth control for three years now, and not pregnant. I am scared something is wrong with me.  I know it can take time, but not this amount. Am I able to schedule an appt. with a OBGYN to find out if i'm "able" to get pregnant? I just got my insurance going...and in six months I plan to marry and hopeful I can find out some information as to where do I start?Thank You so Much.

Answer
Dear Nicole,

Yes, an OB/GYN will be able to do an assessment/evaluation and help to determine if you are ovulating normally and are therefore fertile and able to conceive a pregnancy. He/she will assess whether you are having periods and how regular your menstrual cycles are and may do some testing to find out whether your hormones are within normal limits.

Depo Provera is definitely a medication that tends to have some long-lasting effects. Believe me, you are not the first woman to have this issue.

I would definitely suggest starting with a visit to an OB/GYN. If there is need for a referral on to a fertility specialist, the OB can make that determination.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
