QuestionI had sex on the 25th of October and the 29th of November. I started Trisprintec on the 16th of November and my last period was on the 17th of October. I have also been on tetracycline. I took a pregnancy test on the 28th of November which came back negative. Is it possible I could be pregnant? My nipples and breasts have been sore and I've been cramping. Do you have any suggestions?
AnswerDear Maureen,
The symptoms you are describing are more than likely related to starting the Tri-Sprintec. Like most BCPs, this BCP works by increasing levels of estrogen and progesterone (which suppresses ovulation), changes the cervical mucus (which makes it more difficult for sperm to enter the uterus), and changes the endometrium (which reduces the likelihood of implantation by the fertilized egg).
Side effects of Tri-Sprintec are hormonal in nature and can include:
-Nausea/vomiting
-Headache
-Stomach cramping/bloating
-Dizziness
-Vaginal discomfort/irritation and/or increased vaginal fluids
-Breast tenderness/enlargement
-Acne may improve or get worse
-Vaginal bleeding between periods (spotting) or missed/irregular periods may occur, especially during the first few months of use.
If any of these effects persist or worsen, you should notify your doctor promptly. If you miss 2 periods in a row (or 1 period if the pill has not been used exactly as prescribed without missing any pills), you should contact your doctor for a pregnancy test.
I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
