Ovarian Removal & Infertility: Understanding Your Options - Dr. Kandeel

Question
Dr. Kandeel,
I hope you could help me with my confusion. When I was about 10 years old, i had an operation, and my mother and I were told by the operating doctor, that they had removed my right ovary as well as my right fallopian tube. That was 13 years ago, i am now 23, married and trying to conceive, which i haven't had any luck in the last two years. My GYN had me take an ultrasound to check my remaining ovary and tube and make sure everything so fine. With this process, the ultrasound supposedly showed i had both my ovaries. I felt extremely confused, because, two years back i had an ultrasound done, and it show i only had my left ovary and tube. Not satisfied, i went to the hospital where they preformed my surgery and asked for my medical records. In my files i found a the results of a pelvic sonogram done when i was 15yrs old on Oct. 23, 2003, this is what the results read:

"FULL RESULTS: The examination shows a normal size uterus measuring 7.3 x 4.8 x 2.7 cm. The endometrium measures 0.4 cm. The right ovary has been removed. The left one measures 2.9 x 2 x 1.5 cm. No anomalies are noted associated with the ovaries. No free peritoneal fluid is seen. No abnormalities are noted in the right adnexa.

IMPRESSION: Status post removal of the right ovary. No abnormalities were noted in the right adnexa."

What i understand from this, is that it clearly states my right ovary was removed, but maybe I'm reading it wrong.. Can you explain this to me please?

Answer
Dear Lia

Most probably you have your right ovary removed. Most abdominal and pelvic surgeries are followed by the formation of adhesions especially those on the ovaries. After years these adhesions usually occupy the place of the ovaries and look like an ovary with the inexperienced sonographer especially if he/she does not take a proper history of the illness from the patient. There is no problem getting pregnant with one tube and ovary.

Good Luck
