Right Ovary Pain & 1cm Growth: Understanding Potential Causes
QuestionHi-
I am 34 years old with no children and no history of a pregnancy. November 17th was the 1st day of my last period. I have had a dermoid cyst removed from my right ovary about 4 years ago. Since then I have a few transvaginal ultrasounds. I have had cramping/pain in the same ovary-right. The last two, this year and last, showed something about 1 cm. It did not grow from the last ultrasound. My doctor says it may be a calcification.
I know that for some women, calcifications in the breasts can potentially become cancerous. Is the same true for calcifications in the ovaries?
AnswerNo Calcifications in the ovaries do not have the same sifnificance as clusters or scatterred calcifications of the breast. You may have a tiny (1cm) dermoid cyst of the ovary, as you had in the past. As long as it is less than 6cm in diameter, there is nothing to worry about.
