Understanding Fetal Age in Early Pregnancy: A Guide for Expectant Mothers

Question
Hi, my name is Kirsten and I am 9 weeks pregnant.(11 since LMP) I am a lil confused, since the doctors tell me I am 9 weeks fetal age.I think I should be more like 10 fetal age or 11 maybe. My last period was 07-24-06 and my menstural is usually around 33-35 days, not 28.Am I just not adding it up right or is my baby small for what it should be?

And also, I have one more question..I like to look up stuff on the internet (This is my first pregnancy)and I am also alil confused as to which most sites go off of.Is it your LMP or is it the fetal age for the developement weeks that it goes off of.It seems alil confusing to me.

Thanks-

Answer
Hi Kirsten :)

I did some calculations myself, and I have to agree with you.

According to my calculations, as of today, you are exactly 11 weeks pregnant.

My date for your due date, is April 30th, of 2007.

Its quite possible, that your baby might be measuring a little small right now, as to why they are telling you that you are 9 weeks. Dont be alarmed though, that happens all to often. Its likely, that they will push your dates if they find during the next sonogram that the baby has grown a little more then it should according to their dates. So please, dont be scared, or think there is something wrong. You are fine, and as I said, this does happen frequently.

When calculating your weeks pregnancy, your period is always including in that. So calculating after your period, or when you ovulated will give you an inaccurate date. I know, it sounds confusing. But yes, the menstural period is included in determining gestational age.

Hope this answers your question, and if you have any more concerns, please dont hesitate to write back :)
