Frequent Fainting in Pregnancy: Causes, Ferritin & What to Do
QuestionI am 35 weeks pregnant and have passed out 8 times in the past 11 days. I contacted my midwfe who arranged for a range of blood tests which revealed I have low ferritin levels (4ug/L). However, she is not convinced this would cause as many faints as I have had or with the symptom I get. She checked my blood sugar level and my blood pressure both of which are fine. I get no warning as to when I am going to faint I just suddenly get very strong heart palpitations and then pass out. I get no other symptoms other than this, I feel completely fine before I pass out and completely fine a minute or so afterwards. My midwife has booked for me to see a consultant at the local hospital for an ECG. What does this entail? Any suggestions as to what could be causing my symptoms? Thankyou
AnswerI think that you could be suffering from low haemoglobin levels because of the low ferritin. Have you done a blood test to check your haemoglobin? The other possibility is that because of the pooling of blood in the lower limbs during pregnancy, when you get up, the blood flow to the heart and brain suddenly reduce causing these fainting episodes. I think that both these factors could be playing a role.
