Irregular Pregnancy Sac with Blood: Understanding Your Condition
QuestionHello
I am 8 weeks pregant and have been told I have an irregular shaped pregancy sac and that it is also surrounded by blood. The sac is shaped like a peanut. At 6 weeks I started spotting and that is when I had my first ultrasound. I am now 8 weeks and I had my second ultrasound and was told that I have more blood surrounding the sac than before. My doctor hasne't told me anything except that this sometimes happens and wait and see, meaning either it goes away or I will miscarry. Is there a name for this diagnosis? What is the likelihood having a healthy full term baby if the blood clears? Or since more blood has occurred instead of less should I prepare for a miscarriage?
Any further information on my situation would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
AnswerThis condition is called subchorionic haematoma. The chances of miscarriage increase with increasing maternal age and increasing size of the bleed. If the bleed increases to en strip around 40-50 % of the membranes, then miscarriage is likely. However I will not be able to give you an exact figure as not large scale studies have ever been done before. If the blood clears then you do have a very good chance of having a healthy baby. Even if the blood does not clear but stays stable, your chances of good outcome are good.
