Early Pregnancy: What to Expect Between Weeks 4-8 & Prenatal Vitamins

Question
I am 26 and pregnant for the first time. My last period started on
Sept. 21 2005.  Found out yesterday that I am pregnant. My
health care provider swears that they don't start doing blood test
and etc. until 8 weeks.  Is this ok? What do I do between now
and then. I can't believe there is nothing for me to do until then.
Also, their vitamin does not have Omega-3. I feel that I should
be taking a vitamin with that in it.   ?  Thank you

Answer
We usually start to see patients for their first obstetrical visit at 8 weeks from the first day of your last period. Until then, there is nothing to do. At that time, it is still too early to hear a fetal heartbeat, but your medical history will be taken and you will be examined and a PAP smear will be done. You will be sent for blood work (CBC, Hepatitis B Surface antigen, RPR, Rubella, Varicella, Urine analysis, HIV, Blood type and Rh, etc). The antenatal vitamins are all you need. You do not need Omega III , but if you want to take it you can, if you wish. Make sure that your vitamin contains folic acid.
