IUD Fragment Embedded in Uterine Wall & Subsequent Pregnancy - Seeking Medical Guidance

Question
I had an IUD in place for 7 years. When I decided to have it removed, it broke. There is a piece of it embedded into my uterine wall. Two different doctors have tried to remove it through hysteroscopy and laproscopy and have failed. They can see it on X-rays and on ultrasounds, but when they go in to get it, they can't find it. I got pregnant in March and miscarried at the end of April. I just found out that I am now 7 weeks pregnant again. Is this going to cause problems? What do you think?

Answer
Dear Joy

This depends on the type of the IUD. Copper T IUD is the most commonly used across the world and pregnancy in most cases can continue to term without problems if the intact iud left in place. The risk of abortion or malformations is not different than in the general population.

However, as ur iud is broken, the choice to leave or to remove it depends on its site, whether in the body of uterus or cervix and also on its site in relation to the uterine wall. Your doctor is the best 1 to answer this as he is the 1 who have seen the x ray and sonar.

I have no experience with other types of IUD.

Good Luck
