IUD and Ectopic Pregnancy: Symptoms & Concerns

Question
I had my Mirena IUD placed about three months ago in September 2011. I had very severe cramping, nausea, and dizziness immediately after having it placed and for the next week or so. I know that this can be a common thing. Since then, my periods have just been spotting, which I also know is normal. My last "period" included weeks of spotting. Since having my IUD placed, I have not had ANY cramping other than a very, very mild pain right before or during period. Last night I woke up with very severe cramping that made me feel slightly nauseous and it was only one the right side. I thought this was weird not only because it was on one side, but also because I have not had cramps like this since the day or day after my IUD was placed. I looked up symptoms for several different problems Mirena can cause and I saw that pain on one side can be a symptom of ectopic pregnancy. Is there a chance that I have this? I took a strong motrin last night and finally got back to sleep. Have not felt any pain since. Waiting to see if it comes back to contact my doctor. I tend to be kind of a hypochondriac, so I do not want to make this out to be a big deal if it really isn't.

Answer
Dear Annie

Ectopic pregnancy is a serious condition. It should not be ignored if suspected as it may have some serious consequences up to losing life. Cramping on one side with abnormal pattern of menstruation, either in duration or amount, with an IUD inserted is very suspicious. You have to be examined for proper diagnosis. Trans-vaginal ultrasound and determination of the level of beta hCG in your blood are necessary for accurate diagnosis.

Good Luck
