Paragard IUD: Safety, Fertility, and Cost Concerns - Expert Insights

Question
i am wanting to stop bc pills due to several reasons and am considering the paraguard i.u.d.  their website says it is safe, effective and you can have it removed anytime if you want another baby.  my question is:  other websites say that if you think you still might want children, (which i might want) i.u.d's are not for you.  why?  if they don't harm your fertility, what does it matter?  also, i have seen a big difference in price range for these.  can you give me a reliable price for this, including the doctor visit to have it put in?  what is your full opinion of i.u.d's?

Answer
IUDs are 99.9% effective against unwanted pregnancy and are pretty safe. When you have an IUD in place, you may have heavier periods and there still is a slightly higher incidence of unilateral abscesses, causing pain. We do not use IUDs in women who have not had any children yet. HOwever, there is no problem in conceiving or carrying a pregnancy to term if you had an IUD and then had it removed. Usually, once you remove the IUD, you will ovulate within 2 weeks and can become pregnant easily. Usually, we charge around $400 for insertion of an IUD in the office. The IUD itself is around $150. In addition, cultures for chlamydia and gonorrhea are collected and an informed consent is obtained. As I mentioned before, if you have had a vaginal delivery in the past, an IUD can easily be inserted. If you have never had a baby, I do not believe you should have an IUD. The IUD is usually inserted during your menstrual period. The best method of birth control is the birth control pill, however, because pills prevent iron deficienty anemia, pelvic inflammatory disease, ovarian cysts, cancer of the ovary, cancer of the uterus, and dysmenorrhea. Pills also prevent acne.
