IUD & Early Pregnancy: A Personal Account and Medical Intervention

Question
hello, i just turned 36 and have 4 children last friday i guess it was 6/08 . i could not find my string to my iud and my breasts hurt all that good stuff. Anyway i went in and had an emergency pregnancy test done. the test came back positive with an hcg of 670, i was rushed over to another hospital to a specialist who promptly removed the iud. ( it was a copper) they did an ultrasound and saw nothing. the last day of my last period was may 30. on monday i went back and the hcg was 900 plus. today i went back for more blood work and i am 1500+ .she did a vaginal ultrasound and we saw a sac today. my question is do i worry about the hcg not doubling this early in the pregnancy and just go by the ultrasound or does it matter that the values of the hcg are not doubling. i guess i am just hopeful because my husband and i were not planning on more children and i know the odds of me being pregnant alone after having my iud for 5 years are great and i also know that if he or she does appear in nine months that will truly be a devine intervention.
my question is in your opinion do you think this pregnancy could be viable?
thank you

Answer
Jane,

Wow, that is an amazing story...just goes to show that birth control isn't 100% effective.  Sometimes when HCG levels don't double in early pregnancy, it can indicate the pregnancy isn't viable.  When was the first day of your last menstrual period?  Either way, you are really early in your pregnancy and your HCG levels may be appropriate at this time depending on how many weeks you are ( I need to know the first date of your LMP to figure it out).  I hope this helps.
