Understanding Abnormal CBC Results: Hemoglobin, MCV, MCH, and Platelets

Question
My lab test shows: RBC 3.46L (WNL=3.80)
                  MCV 107H  (WNL=80-98)
                  MCH 34.6H (WNL=27.0-34.0)
                  PLATELETS 788H (WNL=140-415)
Can you help explain the abnormals?
Thank you,Pam

Answer
Hi, Pam, I'd be glad to try and answer your question.  RBC is your REd Blood Cell count.  It is slightly low.  MCV and MCH both refer to the  actual red blood cell itself.  A high MCV like yours indicates that your RBCs are larger than normal (macrocytosis).  A high MCH indicates that the RBCs have slightly more hemoglobin.  Macrocytic RBCs are large so they tend to have a higher MCH.  Increased platelet counts (thrombocytosis) may be seen in individuals who show no significant medical problems, while others may have a more significant blood problem called myeloproliferative disorder (NOT COMMON!). Also, living in high altitudes, strenuous exercise, and being post partum may cause increased platelet levels. Drugs that may cause increased platelet levels include estrogen and oral contraceptives.  Are you having any symptoms?  I would recommend a follow-up with your doctor just to ease your mind.
