Understanding CBC Results & When to Contact Your Doctor

Question
I recently had a CBC done and results were posted on my insurance webpage but the doctor hasn't called.  I complain of body pain, rash, migraine, swelling fingers, high BP, diarrhea, heartburn and fatigue.  When looking at the results...lets say the normal range for something is my glucose result was 93.0 and the normal range was 65-99.  Do I wait until levels are different and then react or should this be a concern to my doctor?  My Neutrophils/100 Leukocytes was at 77%...normal range was 40-74%. Or, my Chloride was at 108.0 mmol/L...normal range is 97-108 mmol/L.  It concerned me ....so wouldn't it concern my doctor.  Now that I have had this rash for a month an a half and my Aunt having scleroderma....I was hoping to know if I could possibly have it or something similar like lupus.  Having these symptoms for 8 years to me warrants some concern.  But each year, each doctor they seem less and less concerned with anything other then the bill.

Answer
Hi Simone.  The two lab results that you've listed for me are normal.  Numbers that are slightly outside of the normal range are not typically of any clinical significance.  But if you're having symptoms that concern you, you should speak with your doctor about these symptoms.  Did you have the bloodwork for insurance purposes or did you speak with the doctor about your symptoms?  If you just had the bloodwork for insurance, then the tests done were just basic "screening" tests.  If you're having symptoms, the doctor can order more specific tests to determine what's going on.  If you're not satisfied with the answers the doctor gives you, be persistent.  You deserve to find out why you've been having these symptoms for 8+ years.  Good luck.
