Understanding Potential Infections During Pregnancy: A Patient's Concern

Question
I recently went to my obgyn due to a positive pregnancy test and current itch problem.  I was given a treatment for yeast, but told some white blood cells were present.  I asked him what that meant and he stated it was common in pregnant women.  I then said, "If I wasn't pregnant what would it be?"  His answer was something like ecoli, I don't know the spelling.  I am afraid I am being treated for one thing but not for another.  When I was pregnant before my doctor gave me a pill which I think was for the same thing I have now.  What does it mean to have white blood cells present in the vagina?  What are my risk since I am in the first stage of my first trimester?

Answer
You did not mention what pill the doctor gave you. We use Diflucan 150mg one time to treat yeast infection. During pregnancy, we usually use Monistat-7 cream or Cleocin cream. The white cells is common and not a problem. If there is any doubt, have your doctor do a swab of the vagina for culture and sensitivity and you will know for sure.
