Understanding Elevated MPV and CRP After a Miscarriage

Question
Hi, I miscarried 3 weeks ago, the baby was approx 4 weeks. I have been having serial blood tests to ensure my hcg is still going down. After 3 weeks my hcg is 11, my urea is 2.7 mmol/L (it states normal value 2.9-7.1) my chloride is 108 mmol/L (normal values 95-107) and my CRP is 4mg/L (should be <3) and my MPV is 12fl (7.4-11.5 is normal) I cant see my gp until next monday. What does this mean? Thankyou for your help

Answer
Hi Karen, I'd be glad to try and answer your question.  Your hcg of 11 is normal after 3 weeks (your doctor may check this until it goes down to 0). Urea and chloride (both could indicate a kidney problem) are only slightly out of range, which is unlikely to be of any clincal significance.  Mean platelet volume (MPV) is a machine-calculated measurement of the average size of your platelets. New platelets are larger, and an increased MPV occurs when increased numbers of platelets are being produced.  But, again, your result is only slightly high, and as long as your actual platelet count was normal, then I would say this is OK. CRP (C-Reactive Protein) is a substance made by the liver and secreted into the bloodstream within a few hours after the start of an infection or inflammation.  A high or increasing amount of CRP in your blood suggests that you have an acute infection or inflammation.  And your CRP is probably elevated because of your recent miscarriage, which would have caused your body some inflammation.  Hope this helps!
