Understanding Trace Blood in Urine (UA HGB) - Interpretation & Causes

Question
I just received the results from my urinalysis..please interpret the following results from the UA HGB analysis: 0.03(trace).

Thank you,
Penny

Answer
Hi Penny, I'd be glad to try and answer your question. UA HGB is blood in the urine (also called hematuria or hemoglobinuria).  There are many reasons for someone to have blood in their urine.  Numerous diseases of the kidney and urinary tract, as well as trauma, medications, smoking, or strenuous exercise can cause hematuria or hemoglobinuria.  But your result is trace, which is a very small, almost microscopic, amount.  This can be normal.  Your doctor may want to repeat the urinalysis and do further testing if the blood is still present.
