Navigating Pregnancy After a Miscarriage: Seeking Reliable Medical Guidance

Question
AGE IS 31. NO CHILDREN. A DRAWN OUT MISCARRIAGE AT 4MOS. 2 YEARS AGO, NOT SURE WHY.
MY QUESTION IS, MY MOTHER IN LAW IS A MIDWIFE, DELIVERED OVER 800 BABIES. I WENT TO A LOCAL OB/GYN AND IT SEEMS SHE HAS HER OPINIONS OF WHAT I SHOULD DO. NOW IM TOO CONFUSED. I HAVE A HARD ENOUGH TIME TRUSTING DRS. MISSED PERIOD MAY 11, LAST MONTH WAS SHORT AND SPOTTY. MY (NEW) OB/GYN WANTS TO DO THE BLOOD WORK, AND ULTRA SOUND IN 2 WEEKS, TAKE REGULAR OVER THE COUNTER VITAMINS, THATS ALL. MOM IN LAW WANTS ME TO ONLY BUY PRE NATAL VITAMINS FROM WHOLE FOODS, 2000MG VITAMIN C PER DAY. ALSO, DOESN'T WANT ME TO UNDERGO ULTRASOUND FOR QUITE SOME TIME. SHE ALSO DOESNT RECOMMEND MILK (WHICH I'M ALLERGIC TO) AND I HAVE FULL PLATE DENTURES. I UNDERSTAND CALCIUM FROM THE TEETH ALSO GOES TO MY BABY. DOCTOR RECOMMENDED 2 EXTRA CALCIUM TUMS IN AM AND PM. MY QUESTIONS, SHOULD I TAKE TUMS, ARE REGULAR PRENATAL VITAMINS FROM GIANT OK? AND WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT AN ULTRASOUND IN 2 WEEKS. I'M A NEW MOM, AND I DONT KNOW ABOUT THESE THINGS. BUT I FEAR IF I DONT GET AN ULTRASOUND, IF THERE IS ANOTHER PROBLEM LIKE LAST TIME, IT WONT BE CAUGHT. I ALMOST DIED LAST TIME. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

Answer
What was the date of the first day of your last period? You did not mention that. YOu only said that you missed your period on May 11. If your last period started around April 11 (even if it was short and spotty) you are only around 5-6 weeks pregnant, now. It is two early, now, to take a sonogram because it would only show an empty gestational sac, but no fetus. However, in two weeks, it should snow a fetus and a fetal heartbeat. Certainly, you should have a Beta HCG done, at this time. I always use prenatal vitamins because I'm confident that they have the correct amounts of minerals and vitamins in them. The baby will get enough calcium from those vitamins and from the foods you eat. You do not have to supplement this with any Tums, or Calcium tablets. HOwever, the baby does not obtain calcium from your teeth and the baby needs calcium for its own teeth. Depending on what your hemoglobin is,you may or may not need supplemental iron during the pregnancy. If you are not having any vaginal bleeding or cramps, there is no reason to believe that there will be a problem and can do the sonogram in two weeks, just to "date" the pregnancy. YOu will then repeat the sonogram at 20 weeks gestation to confirm your due date.
