QuestionI miscarried a little less than 3 months ago. I'm positive everything was expelled, I had an internal ultrasound to make sure. My question now is should I be having pregnancy symptoms like; my butt, legs, and abdominal area becoming swollen, urinating frequently, highly emotional, and being more hungry than normal? Also my breasts are swollen and tender, I am still breastfeeding my 18 month old but they aren't swollen from milk. I'm just wondering if these symptoms could be my body adjusting after the miscarriage or more likely to be actual pregnancy symptoms? Thank you so much for your opinion in advance.
AnswerHi Tesla
Could you be pregnant? If there is a chance I would take a test. If an ultrasound has confirmed that everything has been expelled then your pregnancy symptoms should have settled down after about 6wks.
As you are breastfeeding you probably wouldn't see a difference in your breasts during pregnancy, but tenderness & swelling can be an indication of mastitis. This can be caused if you are wearing an incorrectly fitting bra or an underwired bra, or if your breasts are becoming engorged from less frequent feeding or incorrect latching on. Your little one feeding less may be the reason why you're bloated & weeing more, as the fluid you're drinking is surplus to requirements so your body is retaining it. In the colder weather we urinate more because less water is lost through our bodies via sweating etc. If you're stopping breastfeeding then do ask the advice of a midwife/health visitor/lactation consultant as you need to do it gradually.
On the other hand the bloating & weeing could be a sign of a uterine infection, so my advice would be to pop along to your doctor to make sure all is ok.
It could well be your hormones settling down but if there is any sort of infection or inflammation, it does need to be treated as it can make you feel very poorly.
I hope this has helped you. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions.
Kindest Regards
