QuestionQUESTION: I had my abortion on april26 of this year. And I bleed right after the abortion. And I have been bleeding lightly since. But on May 21 it got heavy so I assumed it was my period and it lasted for a week and something and it got lighter but never stopped. So a couple days later it stopped and I thought that was the end of it. But it wasn't:-( . So Now I bleed for a couple days lightly with very small clots. And its been off and on. Its only off fit like half a day. So June came and I started bleeding heavy again like a normal period so I started my birth control (nuvaring) on June 23. And I've still been bleeding since then like a period. Abs it finally slowed down and today July 2 it stopped and started back again. So I called my doc. And set an appt. Thanks for the help.
ANSWER: Hello, Henrietta,
I don't see a question in your message. What is your question?
I don't find what you are telling me at all surprising. Abortion and Nuvaring both will disrupt a woman's hormones, and until they are balanced again, there are going to be problems. I don't think most women experience prolonged bleeding after a surgical abortion, and it tends to suggest the abortion may not have been complete.
Let me know what you would like to know from me. Also, let me know how far along you were, and whether you measured from your last menstrual period or from the day you think you conceived. Thanks!

QUESTION: I was 7 Weeks and two days. I measured my period from before I conceived. Do you have any idea how long this would take for my hormones to balance back out?
ANSWER: Hello, Henrietta,
Nobody knows the answer to the question of how long it will take for hormones to balance. Every woman is different, and every situation is different. There are so many variables.
My feeling is that your abortion may not have been complete. Most women reportedly don't bleed that much after a surgical abortion, unless the abortion IS incomplete. I think you are wise to go to the doctor. Don't go to anyone involved in your abortion. They are unlikely to be willing to admit things didn't go right. They'll be concerned about legal liability.
Please let me know what you find out, and feel free to ask other questions.
Your abortion has put you at risk for some long term medical problems, so I want to mention some things you should be doing. Be sure and take a Vitamin D3 supplement. This will help safeguard you against the possibility of a particularly deadly form of breast cancer. I recommend about 5000IU a day. You will need to have your blood tested to make sure you don't get too much. Your level of Vitamin D in the blood should be between 70 and 100 ng/ml. Also, you should take a good anti-oxidant such as astaxanthin, and I have just learned that taking Vitamin C regularly would be a good idea. Most likely, the best form would be Lypo-spheric Vitamin C, because you can get a decent dose that will be absorbed readily, and it won't upset your intestines.
When you do conceive again, be sure and tell your doctor you have had a surgical abortion. Surgical abortion weakens the cervix, and a woman may experience repeat miscarriages, or a very early birth. A very early birth can cause some significant birth defects. But there are procedures doctors can do to decrease the possibility. You will also have to be more vigilant for the possibility of tubal pregnancy. If you experience pain in early pregnancy, especially on one side, see a doctor immediately. It could be a matter of life and death. Surgical abortion can also cause complications at birth. They should be able to tell if you have a placenta previa, through ultrasound. Prolonged labor is also a risk. In either case, a Caesarian may be necessary. So it is vitally important you get good prenatal care from someone who understands these risks.
In order to avoid having to go through what you have been through again, if you are not married, you should not have sex. There is no contraceptive method that is completely reliable, and people who aren't married are more likely to experience a failure than people who are. If you are married, and not ready to accept a child, I recommend you learn fertility awareness. If you would like a link for this information, let me know.
You deserve to live without fear of pregnancy, and you deserve better than abortion. So please take care of yourself.

QUESTION: Thank you so much you have been a real big help to me. But through ask this bleeding I haven't had any pain or fever. I only had light cramps the first week or two.
AnswerHello, Henrietta,
You are very welcome. You can't rule out the possibility of tissue still in your uterus because you have no pain or fever, which is why I think going to the doctor is a good idea. Obviously, you have two choices: either put up with the situation until it resolves itself, or go to the doctor and find out what is going on. Some infections are effectively "silent" and don't produce symptoms, but they can do things like cost you your ability to have children, or produce troublesome symptoms later. Good luck!
