QuestionHi my name is Jason and I attend Oregon State University. Recently I expierienced some extreme back pain and it has not yet calmed. It has happened in the past before for a brief period of time like a day or so. Right now it has lasted for like a week and is extremely bad in the mornings or if I rest, excercise and moving around lowers the pain but it doesnt actually go away. My mother has been diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis. I know it is hereditery and I am wondering if I should be concerned about this and need to see a doctor or could it be just a random occurence. Thanks
AnswerHi Jason and thanks for writing,
It sounds to me like you have a simple muscle spasm most likely due to a recent physical strain. There is an old medical expression "if you see hoof prints, think horse, not zebra". Although AS can be hereditary, your symptoms do not sound like anything more than simple muscle pain.
I hope this helps and I wish you all the best,
Margot
