Digestive Issues in 1-Year-Old: Causes & Possible Solutions
QuestionI suspect my 15 mo old son has something wrong...maybe along digestive lines? Past history: Ear tubes put in at 7 mo old, ear tubes removed at 11 mos old because they didn't help. (No more ear inf sinnce they were removed.)C-Dif inf at 9 mo., they said because of too many antibiotics. Diagnosed w/ wheat allergy at 11 mos. Even w/ no more ear inf and wheat removed from his diet, he: is still overly fussy/cranky, has rough skin and a rash that comes and goes on his torso, is constipated more often than not 4-5 days a week, has diahrreah for a day or 2 it seems like once a month, his diaper area smells foul frequently, even tho I may have just given him a bath earlier in the day, he seems to be excessivly thirsty, approx once a week he wakes up in the AM w/ diaper bone dry, he seems to break out into a sweat sometimes because his head gets sweaty/clammy and stinks. I am not crazy, these are things I have been noticing since I really started to pay attention. Maybe they all are not related and are normal for a toddler, but in my gut I feel something is not right. In the past the ENT said 'he doesn't have allergies, you can tell just by looking at him, he's not an allergy kid' Four mos later he tested off the charts for wheat. The Fam Dr. said 6 mos ago 'he's just a fussy baby' The sitter and my husband both believe it's just his personality causing him to cry and be fussy, BUT A MOM KNOWS when something is not right. You can tell the difference when something is bothering him. What do these things point to and how can I get my Dr to listen and advise me where to go from here?
AnswerI am not sure whether all these symptoms can be pigeon-holed into one diagnosis, but I am concerned about the GI symptoms and wonder if he has a food intolerance or GI disease like Sprue..... I would talk to the family doc and see if you can get an eval by a pediatric gastroenterologist.... (I don't know if you live in a big city) but that is where I would go next....
