Flu Vaccine Administration: Buttocks vs. Thighs - What You Need to Know

Question
My 2 year old got her flu shot today and the health officer gave it to her in her
butt. I was surprised by this, as she has always gotten her vaccines in her leg
by her doctor. I am wondering if this will affect the effectiveness of the flu
vaccine? Does anyone know? I read online (I know, dangerous) some sites said
that shots in the butt do not work as well because they don't hit a muscle...

I think I am going to call her Dr. on Monday and ask what they think. I doubt
they'll say to give her another shot, but I'm curious. I need her flu shot to
work this year as I'm 9 mos pregnant!

Thanks for any input.

Chris

Answer
it will work as well.  These shots have to be in the muscle and in a young child, there isn't a lot of muscle sometimes in the upper arm, so a buttocks shot is reasonable.... much larger target area to hit.... the shots work as well in either, provided there is good technique and the shot went into the muscle... the problems occur when there are misses, and the shot stays in the soft tissue above the muscle.
