White Fingers and Toes During Exercise: Causes and What to Do
QuestionHello,
I have a question concerning my daughter. She is 20 years old and is not on any medicines. She is 5' 9" and weighs around 125. She is very active. The problem is that with exercise her toes turn white and numb. Her fingers also do the same. She just showed me, two of her fingers looked like they had no blood circulation in them at all The two fingers looked white. She had no feeling in the two fingers. The fingers were not any colder than the other 3 fingers that looked pink. The two fingers just looked like they had no blood in them. About 20 minutes later the fingers looked normal. This does not happen to the same fingers, it varies from time to time. She does not have pain, just numb. Her toes do the same but are brought on by exercise. The fingers have been doing this numb and white thing more and more often. She will be just sitting in class and it will happen. She is in good health. I encouraged her to see a Dr. Do you think this is something I should push or is this no big deal? Could this just be a nerve thing? Thank you so much for your time.
Answerthis sounds like she has raynaud's syndrome, where the blood supply slows down from blood vessel spasm (assuming it is both hands) and if so, it is only an annoying thing unless it gets so bad that the skin sloughs off on the fingers..... putting a hand in warm water usually stops it from happening.... if it continues she needs a complete evaluation, but it is usually nothing to worry about.....
