Understanding the Risks of Smoking: Information for Concerned Loved Ones
QuestionHello, I had a few quick questions: My sister recently confessed to me that she has been smoking for the past year but it has only been approximately once a week that she's been doing it. Im concerned for her and I was wondering if you could give me some information so that I could inform her on the dangers of smoking in case she doesnt know them all. I work in a cardiology hospital as an intern and the doctors agreed to give me some pamplets and told me a bit about forming neurotransmitter receptors in the brain and how they need to be satiated and how it takes years to be rid of them. I know it can cause cancers and heart/lung disease but thats about it. Thank you!
AnswerHi Jessica,
I guess I would suggest you speak to a pulmonologist at the hospital. You have someone right there that can offer advice.
Did she say why she started? Smoking so little for such a short time ought not be too difficult to stop. There is a new drug called Chantix that blocks nicotine receptors and turns off the urge. I've used it on my patients and have approx. a 90 % success rate. I wouldn't get too technical with her as it will just confuse her more. Unfortunately when people who smoke don't feel bad, they don't realize the harm being done silently, much like hypertension and diabetes.
