Understanding and Addressing Memory Loss in Seniors

Question
My mom for the past year or so has trouble with her memory. Over the holidays we noticed it more because she kept repeating herself excessively and couldn't remember if we already had Christmas or not.
The 3 of us closest to her have tried to talk to her gently about it. That she needs to mention this to her doctor.  She gets angry and defensive. My sister called the dr's office and the nurse said that she needs to be seen..and that one of us needs to come with her so that he can hear both sides to the story. Problem is, my mom refuses to let any of us go with her..and she refuses to tell us when her next appointment is.

So what more can we do!?  Should I write a letter to the dr with things I've noticed..or should I call too like my sister did?
There's nothing we can do furthur that  Ican think of for her to cooperate and let us get involved.  She's even lied and said she mentioned it to the dr already.  :-(

Thanks for your opinion.

Answer
You have already made sure that her doctor knows about it and can do some short easy tests during the office visit to confirm.  Otherwise, there isn't a lot you can do that will help, and will only push her away.   If anyone lives with her, enlist their help.  And when you speak with your mom about it, take a deap breath and make sure you are coming off as wanting to help, not be confrontive.

People with early dementia can get defensive and paranoid.....  I know it is hard.... stick with your plans and make sure you affirm that you support her.
