QuestionMy 30 yr old daughter just found out she is pregnant again. She has had 2 normal pregnancies in her early 20's. Her youngest is 5 yrs old. In the past 2 yrs she had 3 miscarriages and most recently (Jan. 06), she had emergency surgery for a tubal pregnancy. Her doctor had her go for an ultrasound which imaged a gestational sac at 18mm., however no yolk sac was present. They said they would check her again in 2 weeks. My daughter looked on line and located a site that indicated that spontanous abortion was imminent. She is very upset over this news as am I. What insight/hope can you give us.
AnswerHi Lynne :)
Well, it is suspected that your daughter has what is called a blighted ovum.
This means, that even though your daughter may be having pregnancy symptoms, a positive test, rising HCG levels, but there is nothing in the fertilized egg to develop. Sadly, it happens often.
Comfirmation is the best thing, which you are proceeding to do. If the next ultrasound indicates again, that this is a blighted ovum, then yes your daughter will miscarry.
The only hope you have, is that the doctors/tech have made an error, and when they repeat the second test, they have a different diagnoses.
Again, if she has the same diagnoses, her body will abort the pregnancy. Her body may try and hold onto it for weeks, or she could start to bleed, naturally. There is absolutely to tell tale time when it will happen. They may opt to give her a DNC, or, medication to help termintate the pregnancy.
I am sorry my anwers are probably not what you wanted to hear, however, I will keep my fingers crossed, that her next ultrasound, tells a different story :)
Thanks for writing ..
