Understanding Breast Cancer Screening: Mammograms, MRIs & CAD
QuestionDear Karen,
I read where you recommended mammogram over MRI, however I have been seeing CAD exams advertised. I have small breasts, with lots of cysts, but no history of breast cancer in my family. Last time, they sent me to a deeper Mammogram to investigate a cyst, and I nearly passed out from the pain. As a result, I have avoided an exam for four years but realize the importance of needing to rectify that.
Any helpful suggestions?
Karen
AnswerDear Karen, One good way of avoiding pain with mammography is to NOT have or at least reduce the amount of caffine you drink or eat 4-5 days before the mammogram.. Caffine does effect the breast tissue and often makes mammograms more painful.... Believe me when I say pain from a mammogram is NOTHING compared to the pain of mastectomy or chemotherapy and radiation if you simply are not having your annual breast exam done because of a short-lived pain.... You MUST get your mammogram and if you prefer, talk to your doctor about an ultrasound or MRI first and then if something is found, have the mammogram to confirm...
thank you, karen
