Post-Abortion Period: What to Expect & When to Worry - 8 Week Follow-Up
QuestionI had an abortion 8 weeks ago. I visited the doctor and he prescribed me two medications to start my period. Provera and something else I couldn't read. My test was negative and an internal exam was normal. My question is, do I really need to take these? If my test is negative and everything is normal do I need to jump start my period or can I wait longer to see if they start naturally? If I wait, what is the longest I should wait?
I asked this question in another area (apparently the wrong one) and received a very preachy answer. My choice is my choice. Just looking for a little guidance on the pills. Thank you.
AnswerIt really depends. If your are not concerned then you do not need to jump start your period. It can take up to 10-12 weeks after an abortion to get your period. If you want to get pregnant again soon then starting your period would be a reason to stat ovulation. However if you are not desiring a pregnancy then starting an oral contraceptive would start your period and prevent pregnancy.
It really depends on what your objective is. I hope this is not preachy. I usually just try to reassure my patients and not intervene until it has been 12 weeks which is by definition amenorrhea and can be the first sign of Asherman's.
