Post-Abortion Bleeding After 6 Weeks: What to Expect

Question
I wonder if you could put my mind at rest (pleeeease!). I had a medical abortion 6 weeks ago. It seemed normal, lots of pain, but they gave me painkillers so I slept for 2 hours then got up, went to the loo, and passed it, so could go home.  However, have been bleeding ever since.  It seemed to be easing off, then at just under four weeks, turned bright red again. Went and got checked, had internal exam, they felt no problems, didn't think had infection, uterus fine, no indication of anything having been blocked, left behind etc. They (& I)thought maybe was now having period so should wait a week. Nothing changed, so started on Metronidazole 400g 2xday, and Co-Amoxiclav 125mg 3x day.  I am now on my 5th day of antibiotics and still bleeding. Not loads, just a tissue-full when I go to the loo, and have to wear a light pad. Should I now be very worried?? I have very mild period (pain??) not quite pain, just twinges, uncomfortable feeling, low in abdomen.  Am having another check-up on Monday, should I insist on scan? Or is there any possibility that this could be normal, that it will just clear up??  (Obviously this is the answer I really want to hear!!).  Thanks for your help/advice.

Answer
Dear Clarice,
The bleeding you are describing is completely normal, and can go on for up to 3 months after the abortion pill.  It is common and normal to have spotting, fresh bleeding, dark bleeding, clots, etc.  I am not sure why they put you on antibiotics - that should not affect bleeding in any way.

IF the bleeding continues for more than 3 months, or if you've just "had enough" of it - the only treatment that really works is a procedure.  The best procedure in this situation is the aspiration procedure - (a nonsurgical simple method).  Unfortunately, the aspiration procedure is difficult to find (see earlyabortion.com), since most doctors do D&C (surgical) procedures instead.  Nothing that you are saying indicates to me that you need this.

However, pain is not normal - it is unclear that you have pain from your description.  If there were a problem, it would be from having a "clot" that got stuck in your cervix.  They should be able to see it on an internal exam, but sometimes can see it better on ultrasound.  From what you are describing this is unlikely.  Clots typically cause severe pain, not "twinges," so, you are most likely completely fine.
I hope this is helpful!
